To grok something is to understand it so deeply it becomes part of you — this workshop is hands-on time for grokking Aesthetic.Computer, CultureHub Resident Artist Jeffrey Alan Scudder's creative-computing system: a network of small interactive pieces and instruments, all open source, that runs in the browser on whatever device you bring. Participants learn its commands and play notepat, the system's flagship instrument. Mac users install Menu Band — the piano that sits in the menu bar beside the clock, the WiFi, and the battery, free and open source, installed in about a minute — and any laptop can boot AC OS from a USB stick, which changes nothing on the computer's disk. The room builds toward playing together as one ensemble in the studio's surround system.
No programming or musical experience is required, and loaner machines are available for anyone without a computer to bring — you can even Claude on in: bring an AI copilot and make new pieces live. Part workshop, part hangout — with snacks and extreme nerdiness — everything participants install is theirs to keep playing at home, and the session opens the same instruments Scudder performs at CultureHub LA on September 24.
This project is supported within the CultureHub Residency program.
