Signal Distance

November 20-23, 2025
Presented by CultureHub

In this multichannel sound installation at CultureHub, Resident Artist Ivana Dama’s custom-built synthesizer uses cable length and patching to shape audio, combining analog inspiration, physical computing, and collective authorship.

Developed in collaboration with Quentin Bolsée from MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms, Signal Distance builds on Ivana’s research into instrument design, sound, and interactivity. Inspired by early analog synthesizers, the system combines coding and physical computing, allowing audience members to shape the composition by patching cables. The length of each cable determines the intensity of audio effects such as reverb and filtering, calculated using light-speed measurements in collaboration with Bolsée. This participatory work invites collective authorship and reimagines how we listen and create together.

This project was supported within the CultureHub Residency program.
