Chao Bing: A Reading/Writing is a live reading, performance, and un-launch party for a game forever in its own making, writing, and rewriting.
The performance extends Chao Bing: A Read-Only Memory Experience, a web-based interactive memoir in the style of a 90s CD-ROM storybook game by CultureHub Resident Artist Jackie Liu that exists indefinitely in demo form. Named after a stir-fried scallion pancake dish from the artist’s childhood, the game explores memory, care, and transformation through the act of creation. What does it mean to make a game? To want to write over what’s read-only? To look at cycles, break them, and perhaps chop and stir fry them too?
The event will feature reading and play-through of the game, continue with a live performance of making Chao Bing in its multiple forms, and end with a celebration complete with themed snacks.
